The horse also knew the person was holding a stick and in order to avoid punishment it would move forward as well. A catalyst can be describe in a couple ways; one it would be a substance that causes or speeds up a chemical reaction without itself being affected and two a person or thing that precipitates an event or change. With our stick and carrot metaphor this would be the second of the two, the stick and the carrot are both the catalyst for changing the horse’s behavior. In political philosophy there is what’s called a “Troffer” which is basically a mix of offer and threat which will be carried out if the offer is not accepted. This is similar to the stick and carrot metaphor however the offer need not be obvious or even articulated at all, for example.
Kill this person and receive five hundred dollars, fail to kill him and I’ll kill you.
The theoretical concerns surrounding throffers have been practically applied concerning workfare programs. In such systems, individuals receiving social welfare will have their aid decreased if they refuse the offer of work or education. Another example would be when throffers are presented to people convicted of crimes, particularly sex offenders, by accepting medical treatment would result in more lenient sentences. There are many different ways in which troffers or offers and threats are used and most of them are coercive.
Through manipulation, socially influenced behaviors and perceptions can be influenced by sort of underhanded and deceptive means, which could be considered abusive. A person could manipulate another person to advance their cause at the other person’s expense; such methods could be considered exploitative, devious and deceptive. Social influence is not always negative depending on the context and the motivations, social influence is generally perceived to be harmless when it gives the other person the right to object or accept to proposition. It would be considered coercive and underhanded manipulations if the person was not given the opportunity to either accept or reject the offer. |
For example, doctors can try to persuade people to change there unhealthy habits, which we see on TV and just about every where all the time, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to. However if you were told by someone that, if you don’t stop behaving a certain way or don’t stop eating a certain kind of food you are going to become obese, fat, ugly and die, this would be abusive and manipulative and probably was said simply to promote or advance their particular product, program or cause.
This is a special kind of intimidation and a special person that would use it, probably a close friend or family member and it’s where they would suggest something like they don’t care enough for them, or don’t show how much they appreciate them. This makes the other person feel bad, self doubting and anxious where they would possibly make attempts to change.
Shaming is sort of the same thing along with put downs and is normally used as sarcasm which again makes someone feel bad and self doubting. Shaming tactics can be very subtle such as a fierce look or glance, unpleasant tone of voice, rhetorical comments, and subtle sarcasm. Manipulators can make one feel ashamed for even daring to challenge them. It is an effective way to foster a sense of inadequacy in the other person.
Playing the victim is another way people behave in order to receive pity, sympathy or evoke compassion and thereby getting something from the other person. People care and don’t like to see other people suffering and some people will play on these feeling in order to get what they want.
Emotional Blackmail
This is another form of psychological manipulation, employing a mixture of threats, appeals and emotionally punitive behavior to control an intimate someone. It may occur between parents and children, husbands and wives, siblings or close friends. Under pressure one may become a sort of hostage, forced to act under pressure of the threat of responsibility for the others breakdown.

Fear Mongering
The use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end would be considered fear mongering. The feared object or subject is sometimes exaggerated, and the pattern of fear mongering is usually one of repetition, in order to continuously reinforce the intended effects of this tactic, sometimes in the form of a vicious circle. Advertisers use this tactic because they know “fear sells”, and it’s called “shockvertising”, this is very manipulative and turns people into emotional buyers rather then rational. Car manufactures show having fewer airbags will cause your family harm to disinfectant commercials that show bacteria is lurking on every surface in your house.
The evidence does show that "shockvertising" is a highly effective persuasion technique, and over the last several years, advertisers have continued to increase their usage of fear in ads in what has been called a "never-ending arms race in the advertising business".

Politics to Religion use Mind Control
Both use all the forms mentioned above, from the psychological right down to fear mongering, all in an effort to get people to support their causes or beliefs. This form of manipulation changes people’s behaviors, their attitudes, their life styles, spending habits an endless list of stick and carrot mind controls. By changing a persons thinking they can change how a whole society thinks, the media is very good at this as well. The media uses communication to encourage or persuade an audience to continue or take some new action or to drive our behavior. They influence not only our consumerism, but politics, religion, social policy and ideology.

Subliminal Stimuli
Literally classified as; "below threshold", or below an individual's threshold for conscious perception. These are generally just quick little blast of words, images, suggestions a number of things that would generally not even be notice, but have an impact on our thoughts. In most cases it’s used in advertising and sports, but have many uses associated with changing someone’s behavior such as smoking or eating disorders.

Social Influence
This occurs when our emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by others. Social influence takes many forms and can be seen as conformity, socialization, peer pressure or obedience. In 1958, Harvard psychologist, Herbert Kelman identified three broad varieties of social influence.

Exploited by the Manipulators
Amazing how our metaphor Stick and Carrot went from a simple idea to get a horse and buggy moving forward to the complete manipulation of humans in their thoughts, ideals, behavior, society and culture. The psychological uses of the metaphor are broad and have dramatic and fare reaching effects. Manipulators generally take the time to scope out the characteristics and vulnerabilities of their victims, they adjust as needed for the greatest return, effect or control from their manipulations.
